Standing high on a promontory,
Bolsover Castle resembles the fairy tale notion of a castle - and this is exactly what was intended by its builders.
The design of the Little Castle harks back to an age of chivalry and romance with battlemented towers, rooms with vaulted ceilings and colourful decoration.
The Structure is a gem, fascinating to explore and those who visit the Castle today cannot fail to be impressed by the magnificent hooded
fireplaces created from alabaster and marble; the vaulted ceiling and elaborate panelling of the
Pillar Chamber; the Elysium Room with its classical decoration and the ceiling of the Heaven Room adorned with cherubs and angels.

If your taste in architecture is for the dramatic, then a trip to
Hardwick Hall is a must.
Its massive towers, perched on high ground, majestic and mysterious, are
visible for miles and its rooms are of matchless proportions, their decoration
and contents making the whole building a milestone in the history of
British architecture. This splendid Elizabethan mansion is
cased in crystal like a Gothic cathedral. Its architect,
Robert Smythson, had a rehearsal before building in the form
of Wollaton Hall, but the spirit of Hardwick Hall is very much
that of its builder, Bess of Hardwick. |

The four cities of Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield get their
water from the picturesque Ladybower Reservoir at Bamford. One of the most
popular walking areas for Derbyshire locals, the reservoir is surrounded
by the wildest and most savage landscape in Derbyshire.
